What happens if you fail Matric?

Failing Matric can feel like the end — but it isn’t. You still have options, and many students take an alternative route and succeed.

Step 1: Understand what “fail” means

You might have:

  • Failed one or more subjects, but still qualified for a pass level
  • Missed the requirements for a Bachelor/Diploma pass
  • Failed enough subjects that you didn’t get a pass level

Your next step depends on your results and what you want to study.

Option 1: Rewrite Matric

You can rewrite:

  • Specific subjects you did poorly in
  • Or the full Matric (less common)

This can improve your marks and increase your APS.

Option 2: Upgrade your results

Upgrading usually means improving certain subjects through:

  • Second Chance programmes
  • Adult education centres / colleges
  • Private institutions that help you prepare

Option 3: Do a higher certificate or diploma pathway

Many students take a route like:

  • Higher Certificate → Diploma → Degree (depending on institution and performance)

This can be a strong option if you didn’t meet degree entry requirements.

Option 4: Explore TVET and skills programmes

TVET colleges offer practical programmes that can lead to real careers. This can be a great path if you want hands-on training.

Next step: calculate your APS

Even if you rewrite or upgrade, APS matters.
